ABOUT BEARING

A bearing results in linear movement or typical rotation by allowing constrained relative motion in two or more parts. These may be classified broadly according to their principle of operation and the movements they allow and also by the amount of load they can successfully handle. In marine navigation however a bearing is the direction of an object from another, usually it is the direction of an object from its own vessel. A bearing in aircraft navigation is the compass direction which determines the forward direction of the course of the aircraft. In land navigation, it is the line connecting two points and a north-south line, or meridian. It can be measured in two systems, Degrees and Mils.

Hisroty

Dating back to the Egyptians, the oldest incident of using bearing was when tree trunks were used under sleds. The bearings as depicted in the Egyptian drawings also were used as hand drills. A wooden ball supporting a rotating table found in the remains in Italy was also one of the earliest examples of bearing discovered.

Speed

Speeds limits vary with differ with different kind of operations. It is generally specified as ft/s or m/s. There is a considerable overlap between speed ranges of bearing types. Magnetic bearings are the fastest but are limited to the centripetal force overcoming material strength, next are the fluid bearings, followed by rolling element bearings and lastly the plain bearings which can handle only low speed limits.

Load

Depending on the direction of forces and their size, bearings vary greatly. Axial or predominately radial forces can also be moments which are perpendicular to the main axis.

Motions

Common movements permitted by bearings are:

  1. Linear motion, e.g. drawer.
  2. Hinge motion, e. g. door, knee, and elbow.
  3. Axial rotation, e. g. shaft rotation.
  4. Spherical rotation, e. g. ball and socket joint.

Life

Magnetic and fluid bearings can potentially give indefinite life. Statistical rolling element is determined by temperature, load, vibration, maintenance, lubrication and other factors. Some metals provide longer life to plain bearings than most others. Even after hundreds of years, some John Harrison still operate as the lignum vitae wood used in construction, whereas most of his metal clocks are seldom run due to potential wear.

Maintenance

To prevent premature failure many bearing require periodic maintenance, although some of the magnetic or fluid bearings may require very little maintenance. To minimize the effects of wear, most of the bearings in high cycle operations need periodic cleaning and lubrication.
